Effective Paraphrasing

Two simple things to keep in mind when paraphrasing: look for appropriate points in the conversation to paraphrase, and make sure you paraphrase accurately. This will make your paraphrasing more natural and appropriate.

  1. Wonderful! So, what I hear you saying is, it is important when listening to another person to paraphrase back to them what they are saying--and most important of all is to remember that there are natural places in which to offer your comments (timing is everything!) and also that your paraphrasing back to the person must be accurate! Did I get that right? :)

  2. If you want it to sound more natural, then yes, you have to look for natural points in the conversation to do it.

Some people suggest using paraphrasing when you're discussing a contentious issue. It forces you to see the other person's point of view and makes it harder for either party to get mad. If you can make it work for you, then that's great. But it does feel a little awkward to do that throughout a large portion of a conversation.
