Why People Don't Listen, Ask for Help, Sincerely Thank or Compliment Others
I think part of the reason people don't listen, ask for help, sincerely thank or compliment others is because they don't know how to do it. As Dr. Mark Goulston explained in his book, "Just Listen", a Power Thank You has 3 parts. If you keep saying, "I understand,” without actually understanding, you’ll become increasingly uncomfortable as you become more and more lost in the conversation. If all you can say is, “Thanks, er… good job,” or “You did, er… well,” sheepishly, then you’ll know it was a weak statement. You might think you’re never going to be good at it and never become comfortable with it. But you are short-changing yourself if you never learned how to do it and you never practiced it.
